When to get another pet

The simple answer is…whenever you are ready!  You’ve experienced the bereavement process, and you’ve processed your grief…you’re ready to give a loving home to another pet.  There’s no minimum time before you open up your home and your heart to another pet companion again, but I’m just going to raise a few points; and this isn’t a lecture – I’ll readily admit I’ve ignored my own advice when it’s suited me…

It’s tempting to get another pet quickly to “take the pain away”.  This is completely understandable (I’ve done it myself) and I’ve heard it suggested by vets, but please, please bear in mind you’ve had a bereavement; working through the grief process can be tough, but you will be in a much better position to be able to commit fully to another pet – remember your home will be their new home, not a shrine to your previous pet.  Also, if they will be your only pet companion, you need to be able to put them first, rather than possibly comparing them a little unfavourably with your previous perfect pet during their early stages of peeing on the carpet after you’ve walked them around the garden at 3 am/ mouthing like a gremlin to the point of nearly driving you to meltdown/chewing your new favourite pair of shoes/digging holes all over your lawn and then trotting mud around your kitchen floor…

Everybody in the household needs to be ready for another pet.  This especially includes children; just because they’re devastated that they’ve lost their pet, it doesn’t necessarily mean that they are ready to welcome and accept another pet.  Young children especially may not have grasped the concept of death, and may still be expecting their pet to return.

Similarly, if you have other pets they also have to be ready to accept another.  Pets often experience grief when they lose their companion; this may have shown itself through loss of appetite or behavioural change such as searching for their missing companion or not wanting to engage in socialising or playing.  Maybe take them with you when you are viewing a potential new pet.

Remember – even if you decide to get a similar breed and colour as your previous pet, don’t expect a similar personality!  Just like us, they are all unique and special, although they do mostly have one thing in common…what you give out, you will get back from them a thousand times over…
